Beyond the Bottle: Understanding the Different Types of Fragrance

Is Perfume for Women and Cologne for Men? Let's Clear That Up.
For generations, we've been conditioned to think of perfume as something women wear and cologne as something men wear. Walk through almost any department store, and you'll see how deeply this distinction has become embedded in fragrance marketing.
But here's something every man who enjoys wearing fragrance should know: Wearing perfume does not mean you're wearing a women's fragrance.
Perfume is not a gender. It's a term used to describe fragrance.
The word cologne comes from Eau de Cologne, a historically lighter style of fragrance named after the German city of Cologne. It was never originally a classification reserved exclusively for men.
Likewise, eau de parfum, eau de toilette, and extrait de parfum are fragrance classifications associated with concentration, not the gender of the person wearing them.
A men's fragrance labeled Eau de Parfum is still a men's fragrance. An Extrait de Parfum can be created specifically for men, women, or anyone who enjoys its composition.
In fact, a fragrance marketed as men's cologne may technically be an eau de parfum. The word "cologne" on its own doesn't tell you how concentrated the fragrance is.
Consider the notes traditionally associated with masculine fragrances: woods, leather, tobacco, amber, spices, and musk. These notes can appear in an eau de toilette, an eau de parfum, an extrait, or a perfume oil. Their presence doesn't change the fragrance classification.
So, gentlemen, don't let the word "perfume" discourage you from exploring a fragrance.
When you see Eau de Parfum on a bottle, you're learning something about how the fragrance is formulated, not who is supposed to wear it.
And when someone asks what cologne you're wearing, there's nothing wrong with telling them it's actually a perfume.
The distinction is about fragrance, not masculinity.
