The Traditions We Return to Every Fourth of July

When I think about the Fourth of July, I don't immediately think about fireworks.

I think about my childhood.

Every year, my mom and our neighbor would begin preparing long before the celebration started. The meat was seasoned and marinated, and the barbecue sauce was always homemade. The grill seemed to stay busy from morning until evening as family, friends, and neighbors gathered together.

For my brother, sister, and I, the holiday came with its own traditions. There were always new outfits waiting for us to wear. The infamous Slip 'N Slide would make its annual appearance, turning the backyard into the center of the day's entertainment. We would spend hours running, laughing, and trying to stay cool under the summer sun.

At the time, these moments felt ordinary.

Looking back, I realize they were anything but.

Many of our most treasured memories are built from traditions we rarely stop to think about. They are the familiar rituals that appear year after year, quietly becoming part of our family's story. A recipe prepared the same way every summer. A gathering that happens in the same backyard. A table surrounded by the same people, sharing the same laughter.

The Fourth of July has always been about more than a date on the calendar. It is a celebration of freedom, certainly, but it is also a celebration of togetherness. It is an opportunity to pause and appreciate the people who make a house feel like home.

What I remember most from those childhood celebrations is not what was served or what decorations were displayed. I remember the feeling.
